5 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Compare Yourself On Social Media

We all do it. We all browse through peoples tweets, instagram posts thinking they have the best life, all the nice things money can buy but that's not the full picture. When posting on social media its just the highlights of someone's life, your life, my life, we don't know what goes on behind the screen.

But that doesn't stop us from comparing ourselves to those 'picture perfect' lives. Many of us understand this stomach wrenching feeling of comparing ourselves to others, especially when it comes down to body image and materialism.
Sure the pretty flat lays, the so called perfect make up look that may have taken hours rather than 30 seconds in a snap shot video. You're becoming a social media warrior, I don't post the bad stuff that happens behind the scenes because i want to be able to use my social media platforms as place to be positive or at least try to be. We're obsessed with portraying this perfect self image, so here are a few tips

1. We're here to be different. We weren't put on this earth to be the same, we all have different journey's in our lives, a chapter we read out loud. So be unapologetically you, including your beautiful quirks and imperfections. There is no one better. BE YOU

2. Comparisons take away your joy. Comparing yourself to someone else, or something that they have will only take away your joy. Why waste our energy fantasising over other people when that energy can be spent on ourselves. When you find yourself comparing, take a step away from social media and focus on yourself.

3. Stop making life a competition. Whether we admit it or not, when we post, tweet, pin etc it's craving some attention, that's not necessarily a bad thing. If you love posting all those rambling blog posts, or the posts that may not get a lot of views, then who cares what the likes and page views say. They shouldn't be a concern, as long as you are happy in yourself behind the screen. Use social media as a happy pursuit, to find inspiration.

4. Size isn't everything. This includes money, smiles, waists and general stuff. Comparing ourselves to unrealistic goals isn't fun nor healthy. How you measure up with other people who have no importance in yourself life, unfollow those who make you feel lesser than you are. We are in charge of our own fate and our own happiness, no one else

5. We always compare the wrong things. We look at someone and get an impression on how much we think they are worth or how many followers on Twitter they have. Those numbers aren't something we should crave, they don't show self worth. Having a smile on your face and being happy is worth more than numbers. Smiling behind your phone is more important than faking it behind the screen.

I know we live in a society that forces perfection, just don’t let others people affect you. A snapshot of a perfect moment doesn’t tell us everything about that person. Just because they’re smiling for one second doesn’t mean the next they’re walking on the clouds. Stories are rarely shared about others failures and issues, just remember that. Nobody is perfect or can ever be perfect – that includes you and me.

Living life how you want to live it will make you a million times happier than watching someone else’s life and you sit miserably and ‘admire’ from afar. Comparing yourself is an unhealthy habit that all guilty need to get rid of right away. It can distinguish all joy and happiness in your life, and that’s not what life is about. Lets focus on you.

Of course I'm not telling you to stay off social media because what you choose to do is entirely up to you, just don't let it be something to crave your boredom. Be open minded and kind on social media. Take a break from it, its that simple. Every once in a while it's nice to switch off and take a break from social media.
